Trouble With The Shoulder

After spending Sunday with Christophe in the cold, the forecast for my Monday bike commute was to finally have the temperature reach the sixties in the afternoon. It was still chilly in the morning but I was, perhaps, daydreaming a bit. I clipped my handlebars on a road sign. That rapidly turned the direction of my front tire and sent it flying in one direction. I proved Newton’s First Law of Physics and kept going straight, but with the bike no longer under me. The theory of gravity took over and I fell to the ground. Not very gracefully.

I popped up. My right arm hurt and I couldn’t lift it up.

My first focus was the bike. The computer snapped off. There were scrapes. It seemed rideable.

I walked the bike down the street trying shake off the pain in my shoulder. I used my left hand to feel my collarbone. The classic cyclist injury. I felt like it was in one piece. I contemplated getting back on the bike. Maybe a hot shower at the gym would alleviate the pain. It wouldn’t. I called home for a ride to the ER.

Comminuted fracture of right proximal humerus involving the surgical neck and greater tuberosity. I was going to be off the bike for a while.
